Fantasy Opera: third season

And now, before settling back down to work, a third season. The self-denying ordinance can by this stage be somewhat relaxed, so I am now allowing a few more ‘repertory’ pieces (not that I should have found any difficulty in continuing with ‘rarer’ works). By this stage, I thought it was also reasonable to allow composers already featured to return, though the limit of one work per season remains. (Wagner is an exception, since I thought it was now time to start on a Ring: the first two instalments can be staged this season, and the second two next, prior to an entire cycle…)

Zimmermann, Die Soldaten
Mozart, Così fan tutte
Puccini, Gianni Schicchi, and Schoenberg, Von heute auf morgen
Wagner, Das Rheingold
Poulenc, Dialogues des Carmélites
Strauss, Elektra
Berg, Wozzeck
Blow, Venus and Adonis, and Zemlinsky, Der Zwerg
Gluck, Iphigénie en Tauride
Monteverdi, orch. Henze, Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria
Rameau, Hippolyte et Aricie
Rossini, Guillaume Tell
Wagner, Die Walküre
Cerha, Baal
Schubert, Alfonso und Estrella
Beethoven, Fidelio

I agree about Keenlyside in both those roles, though I too have never seen him in either of them. (I think he sang Wozzeck in Paris two or three years ago.) At the moment, I am not quite sure that I have the time for casting, though now you mention it, I keep thinking about it. I am not sure whether she still sings the role, or could be persuaded to do so, but having Waltraud Meier as Marie would be interesting. And whom to choose to conduct? Boulez? Abbado? Barenboim? Haitink?

Very nice, Die Soldaten, Elektra, Wozzeck are part of my idea of a standard rep and I'd love to hear Cerha's opera live, I only have it on a pirate.
